I am a doulos, a slave of Christ Jesus. That is the first thing worth saying about me, and everything else runs downstream of it.
I am married, a father to three sons, and an engineer by trade. I live and work in Cape Town.
Why I write
I am not a pastor and I have no theological qualification to offer you, just a few course at SA Theological Seminary. I am an ordinary Christian who has found that the slow, careful reading of Scripture changes a person, and that most of us never quite get round to it because life is loud and the Bible is long.
So I work through one book at a time, a passage a week, and write down what I find. The discipline of writing forces me to understand a text rather than skim past it. If that is useful to you as well, you are welcome to come along.
What you will find here
Studies that move through a book of the Bible in order, taking the text as it comes rather than selecting the comfortable parts. Each one tries to answer three questions: what does this passage say, what did it mean to the people who first received it, and what does it ask of us now?

What I believe
That the Bible is the word of God and is sufficient. That we are more sinful than we care to admit and more loved than we dare hope. That Jesus Christ lived, died and rose again, and that salvation comes by grace through faith in him alone, and not by anything we bring to the table.
